"There's an ambush ahead, and your gonna need my help to get through it. I'll get the barge ready, but we're gonna need at least 5 propane tanks to be safe. You'll see why later "
―Barge driver[src]

The barge is a resistance watercraft that was cut from Half-Life 2. It only appears in the 2003 storyline map d1_canals_end. It was to be used by Gordon Freeman (at least with putting the propane tanks on the boat and use the Propane Tank Launcher) and driven by the Barge's driver. It was a early prototype model and never made it passed details or anything other than an added steering wheel and a working ladder on the back left side of the boat.

Overview[]

Storyline[]

When the player enters the map from d1_tempcanals_02 the player would pass through a gate and find (on the right side) the Barge Driver standing on a barge with a propane tank launcher attacked to the front of the boat (doesn't appear on the boat when spawned in as it has its own entity name). After the player was to talk to the Barge driver about getting at least five propane tanks just to be safe the player goes across another barge as they make their way to the top of the crane area they go inside the building under the crane as the player comes across a puzzle. The player has to move the red wire to the right side, move the green into the middle, and move the blue to the left of the puzzle and then turn the power on which activates the crane. Once turned on the player makes their way to the crane they move it to the designated spot where the propane tanks areas the player uses the magnet on the crane to pick them up and drop them to the side of the barge by a docking area. The player then moves the magnet to where the designated spot is again. After making it across to the other part of the sewer, the player comes across an open garage full of propane tanks right outside of its door while trying to move some the player would get ambushed by a Combine APC as it was to drive past them down a road. The player was to fight three Metropolice officers once killed the player would go back to moving the propane tanks to the designated spot. After moving at least three more propane tanks to the designated spot the player was to make their way back to the crane the player would drop the rest of the propane tanks to the docking area. Once the player moved all the propane tanks onto the boat the barge driver was to then move to the steering wheel (where the hardtop was) and drive the barge through the canals. The driver was to make their way to the side of the short tunnel as they were to be attacked by a Combine Ka-27, the driver was to tell the player to load up the propane tank launcher as the driver was to draw the helicopter into range by distracting it the player was to load up the launcher with a propane tank. The player was to shoot the propane tank at the Ka-27 as it kills the pilot instantly with one explosion. The driver was to say goodbye to the player as they wished them luck. The level tells the player that the barge crashes through the barricade clearing the players' way to Ravenholm.

The player was to originally drive the barge through to Ravenholm but instead, the player gets off of the barge to make their way into Ravenholm. It is, however, unknown what happens to the driver as it is never explored through the beta.

Trivia[]

  • Under the barge driver's text when he tells the player to get at least five propane tanks there is a note saying: " This barge is a hack and it gets stuck on corners, so move around to get it unstuck ".
  • The Combine V-100 APC, when driven up, has no wheels as it floats down the road.
  • The version that the barge driver has his barge has a static brush steering wheel and a ladder on the back of it. This version of the barge also has a propane tank launcher stuck onto the barge.
  • When the barge driver leaves the player and stands to the (left or right) side of the end of the canals the boat drives itself with no one driving it. It is most likely a scripted sequence.
  • There are no sound files or anything for the barge as it is just a static brush entity.
  • There are two other barge models one without a hardtop as its just the boats shell and a square hole in the back of the barge, while the other model is a static version of the scripted barge as its doesn't come with a steering wheel in the hard roof or a ladder on its back.
  • There are four other barges in the level one behind the scripted barge, one sunken one behind the second hardtop barge (as it has a hardtop but it's sunken), and two with square holes off to the sides of the canals (as they appear to be destroyed barges).
