―Eli Maxwell[src]

Eli Maxwell[2] is a character cut from Half-Life 2 who was merged with another cut character Captain Vance to form Eli Vance.[1]

Overview[]

Eli HEV suit

Maxwell and the HEV Suit.

Originally, Eli Vance was intended to have no more relation with Alyx Vance than being close friends and appear as an old bespectacled man with a white beard, a bonnet, an apron, and walking with a stick because of his missing leg, and named "Maxwell", "Vance" being the name of the captain, Alyx's original father.[1]

He was to use a scrapyard and a cave as his lab, rather than a real building like Black Mesa East.[1][3] A prototype map of this original lab, last edited in August 2001, can be found in the WC mappack under the name "proto_eliden003.vmf" ("Eli's Den"). It does not contain any hint of a lab, but rather some sort of garage with a damaged school bus and several damaged cars, mirroring Mossman's sentence about the facility being more suited to mechanics than research scientists.[2][3]

He would work in that lab on the physics manipulator with his robot[1] Dog and show Gordon a slideshow of what happened between Half-Life and Half-Life 2, mentioning the Air Exchange, among others.[1] In sound files located in the Half-Life 2 Beta files (in the folder /sound/temp/Eli/), he also warns Gordon about Particle Storms, to which he lost his leg,[2] while the final version uses a Bullsquid.[1]

Fate[]

Apart from his last name, appearance, and relation to Alyx, Maxwell is mostly identical to the final retail Eli Vance in Half-Life 2 and its episodes, and Half-Life: Alyx.

One concept art with him wearing a black beanie cap is reused in Half-Life: Alyx, as part of his younger successor's attire with a bit of realistic detail.
