The emergency flare is an item cut from Half-Life and brought back for Half-Life 2: Episode One and Half-Life 2: Episode Two as a Combine item.

Overview[]

Half-Life[]

The emergency flare was originally to appear in Half-Life. Its model can be found in the game files.

Half-Life 2[]

Flares are seen in Half-Life 2, but they are smaller, shot by a flare gun, and are only used by Metrocops and Overwatch Soldiers. The flare gun was originally to be used by the player, and can be found in the playable Half-Life 2 Beta.

Half-Life 2: Episode One[]

In Episode One, usable emergency flares are introduced in the City 17 Underground. Automatically lighting when grabbed by the player, they can be held (and thrown) with the Gravity Gun, mocking the operation of a flare gun, and provide light to the player in dark areas on a long range. In addition to providing light, flares can also be used to set Zombies on fire. This action is needed to complete the Orange Box Achievement "Zombie-que".

Half-Life 2: Episode Two[]

The emergency flare appears in the Episode Two chapter Under the Radar, inside a pit full of Supply Crates with transponders attached to them.
