Force Fields, often attached to Combine Interfaces, are Combine-made devices that prevent any living thing that is not recognized from passing through them. They are used prolifically by the Combine to control Citizen movements and prevent unauthorized access to areas that are out-of-bounds.

Overview[]

The Force Field consists of two generators, each one on either side of the path it is intended to protect. Barely visible from a distance, the force field preventing entry is generated between the two pylons. When an unregistered individual attempts to go through it, it will emit a humming sound when in physical contact. However, the system will not block inanimate objects other than vehicles driven by non-recognized personnel. Bullets are also able to pass through, regardless of the shooter's affliation.

Force fields are seen in-game being powered by a variety of power sources such as standard human power supply sockets, Combine Power Generators, or APC batteries. They are placed at regular intervals along railway tracks in City 17 and in checkpoint areas they are installed alongside barriers and security cameras to contain citizens in their designated zones. Force fields are also frequently used in Combine-controlled areas and can be found along small Combine outposts along the coast and the Outlands, or important strategic locations like Nova Prospekt, the Overwatch Nexus, and the Citadel.

It is worth noting that while the player is merely stopped from moving into a force field, touching the Force Field while it is active will cause a discharge of energy and presumably shock the subject (as seen in the Half-Life 2 chapter Entanglement where Alyx attempts futilely to stop Judith Mossman making off with Eli Vance). An unauthorized subject that is caught inside a force field when it is activated will invariably be killed.
