The M198 Howitzer is a medium-sized, towed artillery piece used by the HECU around the surface of the Black Mesa Research Facility.
Overview[]
The M198 is a powerful artillery piece. It can kill any enemy in one shot, but has a long cool down between shots. It is never seen being used by enemies, but it can be used by the player.
In Half-Life, the M198 appears twice in the chapter Surface Tension. In both appearances, Gordon uses it to destroy a shutter blocking the way and dispatch multiple Alien Grunts along the way.
Tactics[]
While the M198 is very powerful, it has a very slow rate of fire. If an enemy appears while the gun is still in its cooldown phase, it is advised to deal with the enemy with other weapons while the gun is still cooling down, then resume with the M198.
