The Combine Vault Heist was two separate events that occurred on the (presumed) same day from five years before the fall of the Citadel.

Prelude[]

While Alyx performed routine reconnaissance for the Resistance, Eli Vance and Russell worked with several rebels to steal a Combine reactor. During this mission, Russell and Eli discovered images of a mysterious building. Their discovery prompted an immediate raid by Civil Protection, and Eli was captured by several Overwatch soldiers. Alyx, on her way to rendezvous with the two, was also captured.

Alyx was soon freed by Russell, who sent his drone with a grenade to crash the truck transporting her for interrogation. The drone escorted Alyx to Russell's lab, though not before getting inadvertently destroyed by a Strider.

The first Heist (Save Eli)[]

Upon her rendezvous with Russell, Alyx was informed that the Razor Train carrying Eli would be passing through Fairview Junction en route to Nova Prospekt. Outside Russell's lab, Alyx took a hijacked cargo train to one of the entrances to the Quarantine Zone. After hacking a console to unseal the entrance, she proceeded through a path of underground passages and canals on foot towards Fairview Junction.

Alyx would eventually find her way within the vicinity of Gary's residence, where she would begin witnessing unusual events and architecture, as well as depictions of the Black Mesa Incident. Upon meeting Gary, she was by him informed that she could not save Eli from death, but remained uncertain if the death would be soon or further in the future. She was also informed to "look to the Northern Star," and soon left to continue towards Fairview Junction.

Upon reaching Fairview Junction and dispatching several Combine Grunts, Alyx attempted to override the Combine's train controls and stop the transport. Upon this failing, she pulled a manual switch to derail the train, sending it crashing into a sealed-off tunnel, killing several soldiers and Advisors in the process.

After descending through the destroyed train, Alyx discovered Eli had left his cell and was dangling from a broken walkway. While she attempted to reach out to grab him, the walkway broke, and Eli fell into a deep pit. Before he could reach the ground, he was saved by Gary, who used telekinesis to pull Eli to safety. After landing safely on a stable platform, he informed Alyx that he had recovered a Combine datapod containing information about a "superweapon" being held within a Vault in the Quarantine Zone, deciding that they should acquire it before it is moved off-world and out of their reach. After their interaction, Eli began to escape to Russell's lab with the aid of Gary. Alyx proceeded deeper into the Quarantine Zone to begin her pursuit towards the Vault, once again reminded by Gary to "look to the Northern Star."
